| Phil Gellis (Director/Choreographer/Ensemble): Phil joined the company in September of 1981, knowing precious little of Gilbert & Sullivan. More than a quarter-century later, Phil lists among his credits directing this company's productions of The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, The Grand Duke and Ruddigore. He has appeared onstage in every G&S opera except Thespis and The Gondoliers, playing a combined total of 25 different roles in the Savoy Operas.
Phil has written three G&S revues: A Gilbert & Sullivan Potpourri, I Have a Song to Sing, O: The Music of Gilbert and Sullivan, and Gilbert & Sullivan from A to Z. He co-authored (with Al Grand) the English libretto for Der Yiddisher Mikado, which has been performed by our sister Yiddish organization for over two decades. He appeared off-Broadway for two weeks in 1997, playing Sir Arthur Sullivan in Very Truly Yours, Gilbert & Sullivan. He has also served as music director for five productions, and conducted the G&S Light Opera Orchestra of Long Island in performances of Pirates as well as our 50th anniversary gala performance. He created the role of "Scrooge" in A Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas Carol, and has repeated the role in numerous productions over the past 15 years, including three which he also directed. In his spare time, he has appeared in over 60 productions of non-G&S shows at most of Long Island's major theaters, and directed over 20 more, including several productions of The Pirates of Penzance as produced by other companies. Phil is extremely proud to be one of only 11 people to be named a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island in its 54-year history. |
