About Us

Founded in 1954, the
Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island is one of the nation's oldest organizations devoted primarily to the promotion and performance of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. Our performers are all volunteers, coming from every walk of life. While very different in many ways, they all have one thing in common: a passion for bringing these classic comic operas to generations of Long Island audiences.

As a traveling company, we have performed all over Long Island — from Brooklyn to Montauk, from Glen Cove to Long Beach — and beyond. As our prices are quite reasonable, we are an excellent fund-raising tool for any organization.

2004 marked the final year of an ambitious undertaking known as The Savoy Project; or, Gilbert & Sullivan from A to Z. Over a 13-year period, we performed the entire series of Gilbert & Sullivan operas. This project resulted in the Long Island premieres of Princess Ida, The Grand Duke, The Yeomen of the Guard and Utopia, Limited. We concluded in the 2004 season, our 50th, with the all-time G&S favorite, The Mikado.

We are especially proud of our 18-piece ensemble, the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Orchestra of Long Island, with whom we will be giving several performances in the spring. See our Current Season page for more information on these and all our other performances and special events.

We are always looking for new members of our company, whether onstage or behind the scenes. The time commitment is moderate, but the rewards can be substantial. If you're interested in joining us, please Contact Us.
