It was 120 years ago that The Yeomen of the Guard premiered. It is generally agreed that this is the work in the canon of G&S collaborations that most closely approaches “Grand Opera.” If you thought many G&S operas sound musically alike you are in for a real surprise. Sullivan’s score and orchestration have a true symphonic breadth to them and the big numbers pave the way to the large oratorios Elgar was to write in the first years of the 20th century. Gilbert’s libretto is also rather unique. With many light-hearted moments as one would think, there is an underlying seriousness throughout which culminates in the controversial final scene.
